Type Locality and Naming

Qaidam Basin. The type section is the Shigaodian section of the Shizigou structure in the western part of the Qaidam basin, Qinghai. Originally named the Shizigou rock series by Zhu Zonghao et al. in 1959 and renamed the Shizigou Formation by Fei Wenzhong et al. in 1963.


Lithology and Thickness

Yellowish gray conglomerate and pebbly sandstone with small amounts of muddy sandstone and mudstone. The thickness is ~670 to 2340 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It has an unconformable or conformable contact with the underlying Neogene Youshashan Fm.

Upper contact

It has an unconformable contact with the overlying the Quaternary Qihequan Fm.

Regional extent

Distributed in the Qaidam Basin.

Depositional setting

In the basin center, its lithology becomes fine, containing gypsum and halite, with lacustrine deposits being dominant. On the basin margins, the formation consists predominantly of piedmont alluvial-diluvial deposits with fluvial deposits.
